For a change the Falcons backed up their boasts in 1991, finishing 10-6 and ahead of the 49ers in the NFC West. Atlanta ranked 5th in the NFL in points scored, thanks to the potent run and shoot offense led by QB Chris Miller, who threw 26 td passes. Wide receiver Michael Haynes caught only 50 passes, but averaged a league high 22.4 yards per reception and scored 11 times. Andre Rison chipped in with 12 scores. They were the NFL's most explosive receiving duo. But again, it was a matter of the offense outscoring people, because the defense showed some holes. CBs Deion Sanders and Tim McKyer might have been the league's best pair, but the Falcons couldn't stop the run. They beat the NFC West champ Saints in the wild card game, but fell to the Redskins in the next round on a disgracefully sloppy field.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Steve Broussard - 449 yards on 99 attempts; 4 TDs
Andre Rison - 81 catches for 976 yards; 12 TDs
Chris Miller - 220 of 413 for 3,103 yards; 26 TDs; 18 INTs

After the promising finish of the 1991 season, the Falcons fell back to earth with a bang. In 1991 they won the close games, In 1992 they lost them. In 1991 the Falcons went 5-1 against the rest of the NFC West. In 1992 they went 1-5. They got no mileage from the running back spot. Glanville rotated Tony Smith and Steve Broussard for most of the year, but neither showed enough to be the full time starter. Andre Rison had another great season, and Haynes and Pritchard had solid years. The problem offensively could have been the season ending knee injury that QB Chris Miller suffered against the Rams in week 7. Billy Joe Tolliver was spotty in relief, and it wasn't until Wade Wilson got a chance in week 15 that the offense took off.

Defensively, Glaneville's gambling, blitzing, high risk unit gave up 97 points in 2 games to the 49ers and a league high 414 points overall. In the past Glanville's defense had given up long pass plays but were tough against the run. In 1992 though, Atlanta gave up 2294 yards (worst in the league) and 20 scores (#27) on the ground, and let opposing runners average almost 5 yards a carry, also a league high. The Falcons small and old defensive line was their biggest problem, and they really missed SS Brian Jordan who was lost to baseball.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Steve Broussard - 363 yard on 84 attempts, 1 TD
Andre Rison - 83 catches for 1,119 yards; 11 TDs.

1993 was a very strange season of alternating streaks for the Falcons. They opened the season with a five game losing streak, then won six of the next eight and looked like they could make a serious run at the playoffs with the last three games being against sub .500 teams. They ended the season with a three game losing streak however, which sealed coach Glanville's fate.

QB Chris Miller didn't react well to the competition from Hebert, and played badly, being replaced by him in week 2, and reinjuring his knee in week 4. Hebert played well in relief. Andre Rison had a typically great season, as did Haynes and Pritchard/ Erric Pegram had a breakthrough season running the ball, gaining 1185 yards, the first Falcons back to gain over 1000 since John Settle in 1988. The improved Falcon offense couldn't compensate for a typically poor defensive effort though. They gave up a league high 385 points , 146 of them in the first four games. Deion Sanders return in week 6 helped spark a minidefensive revival, but too little pressure on opposing QBs coupled with the poor play at the LCB spot doomed the defense, despite gutsy play of Jesse Tuggle and Pierce Holt.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Erric Pegram - 1,185 yards on 292 attempts; 3 TDs
Andre Rison - 86 catches for 1,242 yards; 15 TDs
Bobby Hebert - 263 of 430 for 2,978 yards; 24 TDs; 17 INTs

A season of near misses for the Atlanta Falcons in June Jones first season as head coach. They were leading in 14 games at half time, and 11 of those at the 2 minute warning. Just 2 more defensive stops at critical times, and the Falcons would have made the playoffs, despite possessing the league's 27th ranked defense.

The offense despite possessing some completely new pieces at each of the skill positions, quickly fell into place. QB Jeff George looked shaky at time, but had a very good first run-and-shoot season overall, and started all 16 games. RB Craig Heyward regained lost form, and proved to be the perfect back for the R&S. With the losses of Pritchard and Haynes, the question was could the Falcons WR possibly be as good? They proved to be better! Terance Mathis had an unbelievable introduction to the R&S catching 111 passes and smashing Rison's Single season receiving record. Rison was solid as ever, and Ricky Sanders and Bert Emanuel caught over 110 passes between them. The problem again was the Falcon's D. They couldn't come up with the big play when needed. They surrendered 30 or more points 7 times in 94, and lost a pair of intradivisional matchups to the 49ers by an aggregate score of 92 to 17. DE Chuck Smith was a revelation with 11 sacks, but Chris Doleman and Pierce Holt were disappointing. After safeties Roger Harper and Alton Montgomery were lost for the season with injuries, the Falcons 4-2-5 defense turned into a dismal failure.
