After the Dolphins completed an unprecedented 17-0 season, Shula got carried away.

Miami entered Super Bowl VII unbeaten, untied, and hoping to become the first team in NFL history to complete a season without a loss. QB Earl Morrall was benched by Dolphins coach Don Shula in favor of Bob Griese, who had missed much of the season with a broken ankle. Griese played well, but the heroes for the Dolphins were Larry Csonka, who rushed for 112 yards, and the No-Name Defense, which held the Redskins' offense scoreless. This game also produced the most comical play in Super Bowl history: Miami kicker Garo Yepremian's abortive pass following a blocked field goal. Washington's Mike Bass intercepted Garo's wounded duck and returned it for a touchdown. Scott intercepted two Billy Kilmer passes to win the MVP award.

Super Bowl VII Recap

Miami went 14-0 in the regular season, but had struggled in its two playoff wins over Cleveland (20-14) and Pittsburgh (21-17). Washington was 11-3 during the regular season but was impressive in playoff wins over Green Bay (16-3) and Dallas (26-3).

THE DOLPHINS, A SLIGHT UNDERDOG, played virtually flawless football in the first half. Late in the first quarter Bob Griese directed Miami on a 63-yard drive capped off by a 28-yard pass to Howard Twilley. Then, just before the half, Jim Kiick went over from the one-yard line to give Miami a 14-0 lead.

Washington was apparently going to be shut out when, with two minutes remaining in the game, Miami's Garo Yepremian attempted a 42-yard field goal only to have it blocked. Yepremian then attempted to pass, only to have the ball slip out of his hands right to Mike Bass of the Redskins. Bass ran 49 yards for the score.

Miami safety Jake Scott picked off two passes in the game and was named MVP.
