Wide receiver Cris Collinsworth of the Bengals came down with this pass but the Bengals still fell to the Niners.

Cincinnati outgained San Francisco 356 yards to 275, but four Bengals turnovers made the difference in the first Super Bowl played in a cold-weather city. By halftime at the Silverdome, the Niners had jumped out to a 20-0 lead, but the Bengals closed to within six points at the start of the fourth quarter. Ray Wersching hit all four of his field-goal attempts for the Niners, including 40- and 23-yarders in the fourth quarter to ice the victory. Montana won the first of his three MVP awards by going 14-for-22 for 157 yards.

Super Bowl XVI Recap

Ray Wersching kicked a Super Bowl record-tying four field goals to help lift the 49ers to their first NFL Championship with a 26-21 win over the Bengals.

THE 49ERS BUILT A GAME-RECORD 20-0 HALFTIME LEAD on the strength of two long touchdown marches and two Wersching field goals. Joe Montana, the game's MVP, capped an 11-play, 68-yard drive with a one-yard run to open the scoring; fullback Earl Cooper caught an 11-yard scoring pass from Montana to climax a Super Bowl record 92-yard, 12-play drive; and Wersching split the uprights from 22 and 26 yards out.

The Bengals roared back in the second half, narrowing the margin to 20-14 on quarterback Ken Anderson's five-yard run and four-yard scoring toss to Dan Ross. But Wersching connected on early third-quarter field goals of 40 and 23 yards to increase the 49ers' lead to 26-14, making Anderson's three-yard touchdown pass to Ross (who set a Super Bowl record with 11 receptions for 104 yards) in the final seconds meaningless.

Montana completed 14 of 22 passes for 157 yards; Anderson established game records for completions (25) and completion percentage (73.5 percent on 25 of 34). The Bengals outgained the 49ers 356 yards to 275, marking the first time a team gaining the most yards from scrimmage lost the Super Bowl.
