Davis, who missed the second quarter with a migraine, led the Broncos to a 31-24 victory over Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.

The streak is over, as the Denver Broncos defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-24 to bring the Lombardi Trophy back to the AFC for the first time since the Los Angeles Raiders beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII. Terrell Davis, who ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:45 remaining, won Super Bowl XXXII MVP honors. John Elway -- winless in three previous NFL title game apperances -- was a modest 12-for-22 for 122 yards and one rushing touchdown. With the victory, Elway became the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XXXII Recap

San Diego, CA (TSN) - Terrell Davis' third one-yard rushing touchdown of the game snapped a deadlock with 1:45 remaining in the fourth quarter and lifted the Denver Broncos to an improbable 31-24 win over the defending champion Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII at Qualcomm Stadium. Davis, who sat out the entire second quarter with a migraine headache, carried the ball 30 times for 157 yards and was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

Denver quarterback John Elway hands off to Super Bowl XXXII MVP Terrell Davis.

Denver's John Elway snapped the Super Bowl jinx for the quarterback class of 1983, earning his first NFL championship in four tries with the Broncos. The future Hall of Famer finished 12-of-22 for 123 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, as the Broncos snapped a 13-year winning streak by the NFC in the Super Bowl. The AFC had not won a Super Bowl since 1984, when the Raiders defeated the Redskins. Denver, which entered the game as nearly a two-touchdown underdog, also became just the second NFL wild-card team to capture the title, joining the Raiders after the 1980 season. The Broncos earned their first title in five trips to the big game.

"It's been a lot of work. And, so many things going against us, the NFC, AFC, all type of things, it's unbelievable," said Elway. "You wonder if you're going to run out of years. But fortunately I hung on, and Mike (Shanahan) came in here and got it done for us."

When asked if he would retire now that he has won a Super Bowl, Elway's only response was, "I'll talk to you," as he rushed off the field to join his teammates.

Packers quarterback Brett Favre -- the reigning three-time league MVP -- completed 25 of his 42 pass attempts for 256 yards, with three TD's and an interception.

Favre connected with Antonio Freeman on a 13-yard TD pass to tie the game at 24-24 1:28 into the fourth quarter, but the Broncos kept their composure. The Broncos started the winning drive at the Green Bay 49-yard line with 3:27 left to play. Davis started the march by rushing for a short gain, but a key face mask penalty on Darius Holland added 15 yards to the play. Davis rushed for another yard on 1st-and-10 from the 32 and Elway found Howard Griffith for a big gain to the Green Bay eight at the two-minute warning. A key block by Ed McCaffrey on Brian Williams allowed Griffith to gain 23 yards. Davis rushed for no gain on 1st-and-goal and a 10-yard holding penalty on Denver's Shannon Sharpe pushed the Broncos back to the 18. Davis rushed to the left side and was headed for the end zone but was pushed out of bounds at the one. Elway went right back to Davis, who ran up the middle into the end zone untouched for a 31-24 lead with 1:45 remaining.

The Packers started the ensuing drive on their own 30-yard line. Dorsey Levens made it interesting when he took a short pass and ran for a 22-yard gain to the Denver 48 on the first play of the drive. Favre found Levens for a 13-yard completion on 2nd-and-10 to the Denver 35. Levens again received a pass from Favre, this time for four yards to the Denver 31. Two incomplete passes by Favre left the Packers at 4th-and-6 with 32 seconds remaining. Green Bay was then charged with its third and final timeout for an injury on the field after a collision on an incomplete pass to Robert Brooks. Favre dropped back under heavy pressure on the decisive 4th-and-6, but linebacker John Mobley knocked down an attempted pass to Mark Chmura to seal the win.

The Packers won the coin toss and marched up field to grab a quick 7-0 lead. The Denver defense came out strong, but Favre kept the drive alive with a 13-yard pass to Freeman on 3rd-and-9, taking Green Bay to its own 38. Levens rushed the ball on the next three plays. He gained 13 yards on the first burst then added another 11 to put the Packers at the Denver 38-yard line. Levens gained another three yards and Favre hit Freeman with a 13-yard pass. On the next play, Favre capped the eight-play, 76-yard march with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Freeman in the back of the end zone with 10:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Vaughn Hebron returned the ensuing kickoff 32 yards to the Denver 42-yard line, and Davis rushed twice for a total of eight yards. Elway hit Davis with a four-yard pass for a first down on 3rd-and-2, but the QB tossed two incomplete passes to set up a 3rd-and-10 at the Green Bay 46-yard line. Elway's third-down pass to Willie Green was incomplete but Doug Evans was penalized for holding and the ball was spotted at the Packer 41. Davis followed by running off left tackle for a 27-yard gain, then added another two yards to put the Broncos at the 12. Elway was then forced out of the pocket and scrambled for a 10-yard gain. Hebron was denied on 1st-and-goal from the two, but Davis scampered in from one yard out on the next play to knot the game at 7-7 with 5:39 remaining in the opening quarter. The march covered 58 yards on 10 plays.

The Packers turned the ball over on their next possession as Tyrone Braxton intercepted Favre's pass to Levens on 2nd-and-5. Denver took over at the Green Bay 45 and Davis rushed for a 16-yard gain on the first play of the drive. Elway connected with Sharpe for a nine- yard gain, and Davis rushed three yards for a first down to the Packer 17. The Broncos were stopped on their next two plays, but Holland was whistled for an offsides violation, setting up the Broncos with a 2nd-and-3 at the Green Bay 10. Davis rushed five yards for a first down, but was shaken up on the play when he was inadvertently kicked in the head. Hebron rushed three yards on the next play, and Davis carried the ball for a two-yard gain to the Green Bay three as the first quarter came to an end.

On the first play of the second quarter Elway went around the right end and walked into the end zone to give the Broncos the lead. Denver had not scored a second-quarter touchdown in its previous four trips to the Super Bowl. Denver held a 14-7 lead, but had to play the entire second quarter without Davis, who was sent to the locker room with the head injury. Davis carried the ball nine times for 64 yards in the first quarter.

The Packers once again turned the ball over on their next possession as Favre dropped back to pass and was hit by Steve Atwater. The ball came loose and Neil Smith recovered at the the Green Bay 33. Denver could not get anything going during the drive and had to settle for a 51-yard field goal by Jason Elam to give the Broncos a 17-7 lead with 12:21 left in the second quarter.

Green Bay went three and out on its next possession, but got the ball back about 2 1/2 minutes later. Favre connected with Chmura on a key 21-yard pass on 3rd-and-10 and Levens followed by running off right tackle for 15 yards and a Packer first down at their own 26. Levens rushed for another seven yards and Favre hit Brooks for a first down. Three straight completions by Favre put the Packers at the Denver 32-yard line. Favre hit Chmura with an 11-yard pass to the 21 at the two-minute warning, and found Terry Mickens for a six-yard gain on 2nd-and-10. Levens rushed for a first down to the Denver 11, and Chmura was later called for a false start to push the Packers back to the 16-yard line. Favre found Brooks for a 10-yard gain on 2nd-and-15, then spotted Chmura, who made a leaping catch in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown. The lengthy drive went 17 plays and 95 yards in 7:26, as Green Bay pulled within 17-14 at the break.

Davis returned to action but fumbled the ball on the first play of the second half. Cornerback Tyrone Williams recovered the miscue at the Bronco 26-yard line, and the Packers nearly gave the ball right back, but Atwater dropped a clear interception. Green Bay appeared to settle for a field goal when Ryan Longwell split the uprights from 39 yards out, but Denver's Alfred Williams was penalized for offsides, and the Packers elected to decline the field goal and take the first down at the Bronco 15. Two false start penalties on Adam Timmerman and Frank Winters pushed the Pack back to the 25, and Green Bay settled for a 27-yard field goal by Longwell to the game at 17-17 with 11:59 left in the third quarter.

The Broncos went three and out on their next possession but got the ball back on their own eight-yard line with 7:46 left in the quarter. Davis rushed for a first down on 3rd-and-2 and added another four yards to put the Broncos at their own 24. Elway then lofted a pass to McCaffrey, who went 36 yards to the Green Bay 33. Davis gained another eight yards and Elway connected with McCaffrey for a gain of nine to the Packer 16-yard line. Elway scrambled for eight yards on 3rd-and-6, and Davis rushed to the one on a 1st-and-goal from the four-yard line. Elway went right back to Davis, who scored off the right guard with 34 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Broncos a 24-17 lead. The 13-play, 92-yard drive lasted 7:12.

The Packers turned the ball over again, as Freeman fumbled on the ensuing kickoff. Tim McKyer fell on the ball on the Green Bay 22, and Elway quickly went for the kill. But his pass to Rod Smith in the end zone was picked off by Eugene Robinson, who returned the interception to the Green Bay 15-yard line with 11 seconds left in the third. Favre closed out the quarter with a 27-yard pass to Freeman to take the Packers to their own 42.

A pass interfence call on Darrien Gordon on the first play of the fourth quarter put the Packers at the Denver 33, and Favre hit Freeman for a 17-yard gain on 2nd-and-7. Favre went right back to Freeman for a 13-yard TD pass which tied the game at 24-24 with 13:32 remaining. Favre was 4-for-4 on the drive, which went 85 yards in just four plays.

Green Bay got the ball back with 5:25 remaining, but two penalties on rookie tackle Ross Verba pushed the Packers back to their own 10-yard line. Favre's pass to Freeman on 3rd-and-11 was incomplete, and Craig Hentrich's 39-yard punt gave the Broncos excellent field position to drive for the winning touchdown.

Super Bowl XXXII Another Recap

SAN DIEGO -- John Elway proved to himself what everyone else already knew -- that he belongs with the best quarterbacks who ever played in the NFL.

To Elway, only a Super Bowl victory does that. And he finally got one Sunday.

"They made this game for quarterbacks and you've got to win this game to be up there with the elite," Elway said after the Denver Broncos' 31-24 victory vs. Green Bay gave him his first Super Bowl win in four tries.

"It wouldn't have been a complete career."

It is now -- even after losses in 1987, 1988 and 1990 by a total of 96 points.

Elway lingered amid the chaos on the field long after the game was over.

HE CLASPED THE SILVER Vince Lombardi trophy and pressed it against his cheek, a look of utter relief on his face. Then he hoisted his 8-year-old son, Jack, on his shoulder as he slowly made his way to the locker room.

It was over.

Elway did not break the NFC's string of 13 straight victories all by himself.

MVP Terrell Davis gained 157 yards in 30 carries and scored three times on 1-yard runs, including the winner with 1:45 left in the game. Fritz Shurmur, the Packers' defensive coordinator, acknowledged the Packers let the Broncos score so they could have time to come back.

They did, but their final chance ended when John Mobley knocked down Brett Favre's pass from the Denver 31 with 28 seconds left.

Davis starred despite a migraine headache that caused him to miss most of the second quarter.

"I couldn't see," said Davis, a nose tackle at San Diego's Lincoln High. "I needed halftime to get back into the game. You can't top this. I wanted to come back home and do well."

ELWAY ALSO GOT HELP FROM the Packers, who committed three turnovers -- the first by an NFC team in four Super Bowls -- that led to 10 Denver points.

If this wasn't the best Super Bowl ever, it was close to it, despite a lot of sloppiness -- 16 penalties and five turnovers by the two teams. Elway threw an end-zone interception when the Broncos had a chance to go ahead by more than a touchdown late in the third quarter.

But otherwise, it was two heavyweights going punch for punch -- Favre, who was 25-of-42 for 257 yards, threw for three TDs, two to Antonio Freeman. Davis had three 1-yard TD runs and Elway had a fourth.

"It was like a basketball game," Green Bay running back Dorsey Levens said. "They score. We score. They score. We score. We just weren't able to get that extra score."

For Elway, this was vindication in perhaps his last shot at a title. He was carried off the field by teammates as the oldest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl.

IT MAY HAVE BEEN HIS last game. Before the game, he had talked about retiring.

"I'm going to take a few weeks off and think about it," Elway said. "I want to talk to my teammates and everyone around me and see what's best for my family."

The victory kept Denver from becoming the first team ever to lose five -- it lost one in 1978, before Elway arrived.

"They disrespected us all week," Denver tight end Shannon Sharpe said. "Everybody disrespected us. They never faced a running game like ours. They never faced a quarterback like ours. They never faced a coach who puts in a game plan like Mike Shanahan."

As for the AFC, it hadn't won since the Raiders, then in Los Angeles, beat Washington 38-9 in 1984, Elway's first season. Instead, Denver joined the 1981 Raiders as the only wild cards to win the title.

And finally, it was the first win for the quarterback class of 1983 that included Elway, Jim Kelly and Dan Marino.

"In kind of a strange way -- John Elway, I've always enjoyed him," Packers coach Mike Holmgren said. "I just wished he hadn't done it against me."

THE PACKERS HURT THEMSELVES with three critical penalties late in the game.

They included a holding call and a false start on rookie left tackle Ross Verba that bottled Green Bay deep with the game tied 24-all and less than five minutes left. Then a face mask on Darius Holland gave the Broncos 15 key yards on their game-winning 49-yard drive.

But nonetheless, it was Elway's game.

He scrambled 8 yards to set up a touchdown, and scored on a 1-yard run -- a lot like the young Elway. He finished 12-of-22 for 122 yards and threw one end-zone interception.

Each team scored a touchdown on its first possession, the first time that's happened in a Super Bowl.

Then Denver jumped to a 17-7 lead before a 17-play, 95-yard scoring drive by the Packers, second longest in Super Bowl history. That cut it to 17-14 at halftime and Green Bay seemed to have momentum.

But Elway engineered a 92-yard drive of his own to give the Broncos a 24-17 lead. Then, after Elway threw the interception, the Packers went 85 yards in just four plays to tie it.

THE THIRD QUARTER DID NOT start well for Denver.

Davis fumbled on his first carry of the second half, and Brian Williams recovered at the Denver 26.

That led to Ryan Longwell's 27-yard field goal that tied it at 17. An offside penalty on a successful 39-yard kick had given the Packers a second chance at a TD, but they couldn't take advantage.

Late in the third quarter, the Broncos drove nearly the length of the field on 13 plays for a touchdown on Davis' 1-yard run. Elway combined with Ed McCaffrey on a 36-yard play and helped set up the score with an 8-yard scramble that ended when he was sandwiched by tacklers and spun around in the air at the Green Bay 4.

Then came a bizarre sequence.

Freeman fumbled the kickoff and Denver's Tim McKyer recovered at the Green Bay 22. But on the next play, Elway's pass into the end zone was intercepted by Eugene Robinson.

The Packers then tied it two minutes later on Favre's 13-yard pass to Freeman at the end of another long drive -- 85 yards on four plays, helped by a 25-yard pass interference call on Darrien Gordon.

GREEN BAY STRUCK FIRST, just 4:02 into the game, on a 22-yard pass from Favre to Freeman. Freeman split the Denver secondary, beating safety Steve Atwater after Gordon blitzed.

But the key play of the 76-yard, seven-play drive was the second, when Favre managed to throw the ball away after Neil Smith and Maa Tanuvasa seemed to have him trapped for a sack.

Denver came right back, going 58 yards on 10 plays.

The key was a defensive holding call on Green Bay's Doug Evans as Elway threw an incomplete pass on third-and-10 from the Packers 46.

On the next play, Davis went 27 yards around left end to the 14. Elway scrambled to the 2, and then Davis went in from the 1 two plays later to tie it at 7.

Soon after, Tyrone Braxton intercepted Favre, setting up a 45-yard, eight-play drive capped by Elway's 1-yard rollout into the end zone on the first play of the second quarter.

"This erases a lot of the bad memories, a lot of the bad feelings. Now we just want to sit back and enjoy it," said Braxton, with Elway and Atwater the only Broncos left from their last team to lose a Super Bowl.

LESS THAN THREE MINUTES later it was 17-7 on Jason Elam's 51-yard field goal. It was set up when Atwater blitzed Favre, hit him and forced a fumble that Smith recovered at the Green Bay 33.

Then the Packers went 95 yards in 17 plays, capped by Favre's 6-yard TD pass to Mark Chmura on a third down in the corner of the end zone with 12 seconds left in the half.

Then came the second half and more back and forth.

"This was a lot of fun for the whole NFL," said Denver cornerback Ray Crockett. "These were the two best teams in the world and we played for it."

But it was Elway's game, a fact acknowledged by Favre, who has won three straight league MVPs.

"He's had a great career," Favre said, "and he finally got the most important thing that the NFL has to offer."
