RHEIN Fire was celebrating another World Bowl success Sunday after sneaking past the Scottish Claymores 13-10 on the back of Pepe Pearson's 1-yard run with just 1:12 remaining in a thrilling championship showdown at Frankfurt's Waldstadion.

The Fire won the game with tough defense and some hard fourth quarter running from Pearson, who gained 48 yards on six carries on the game-winning drive.

Despite being held to 90 yards passing and being intercepted twice, Fire quarterback Danny Wuerffel admitted to being thrilled at winning a World Bowl ring.

The former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback said: "It's a great great feeling to win a championship with these guys. The character on this team is as good as any I have ever been around and that's what got us through at the end of the game.

"The defense dominated and even though our skill position players didn't connect, we ran the ball hard and this is a great feeling."

Pearson, who finished with 61 rushing yards, added: "It feels great to be part of a championship team and we're glad we did this for the fans, the coaches and everybody back home. It was a great experience."

Head coach Galen Hall said: "I'm very proud of our football team, our coaches and everyone connected with our organisation. We fought very hard and I expected it to come down to the last minute because that's the way this season has gone and they are a very good team."

Wuerffel will now turn his attention to attempting to win a job in the NFL, although he did admit he wouldn't worry too much about the future immediately after World Bowl 2000.

He said: "If I never play another down of football I will be real happy it ended like this on a team with players like Pepe Pearson and playing for a coach like Galen Hall.

"There's something real special about this group of people. Maybe coming all the way to Germany made us learn to love one and other, and that makes it real sweet and real special.

"There are guys on this team who I will be friends with for a long time."

Having lifted his second World Bowl in three years, Hall made it clear he would love to return to Germany for another season with the Fire.

"I certainly don't think it's time to say goodbye," Hall said. "Unless the Rhein Fire has something to say about it. I'm very happy with life in Dusseldorf and this organization.

"I really haven't thought about stepping down so hopefully everything will work out next year."

The World Bowl trophy, which stands 14 inches high, consists of a nine-and-one-half-inch crystal sphere and a permanent display base. The sphere, which is an outline of the world, was etched with a high-pressured knife by hand. It was produced by John Morrison, of Cornerstone Glassworks of Dallas, Texas. After the London Monarchs defeated the Barcelona Dragons in World Bowl '91, they stored the coveted trophy inside the Tower of London. The crystal sphere of the World Bowl trophy weighs 41 pounds (18.6 kg). In comparison, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the Super Bowl, weighs 6.7 pounds (3.04 kg).
