LONDON MONARCHS 21, BARCELONA DRAGONS 0 -- In the first-ever World Bowl before 61,108 fans at London's Wembley Stadium, Monarchs safety DAN CROSSMAN had three interceptions, including a 20-yard return for a score and quarterback STAN GELBAUGH threw for two touchdowns to highlight London's 21-0 triumph over the Barcelona Dragons. The victory allowed London to avenge their only defeat of their 9-1 season, a 20-17 setback to the Dragons in the final week of the regular season.
The Monarchs, despite being outgained 332-245 yards, forced six Barcelona turnovers, including intercepting Dragons quarterback SCOTT ERNEY four times. Erney had posted only two interceptions during the regular season. London scored twice within a span of 2:42 in the first half to secure the title. First, Gelbaugh connected with wide receiver JON HORTON for a 59-yard TD pass on the final play of the first quarter, and then Crossman intercepted Erney's pass in the flat and romped 20 yards for a score. London concluded the game's scoring with 43 seconds remaining in the half when a 14-yard pass from Gelbaugh to JUDD GARRETT climaxed a nine-play, 55-yard drive that was started by Crossman's third interception.
Gelbaugh passed for 191 yards while Garrett hauled in 13 passes for 99 yards to lead the Monarchs offensive attack. Defensively, free safety DEDRICK DODGE chalked up nine solo tackles and an interception, while linebacker MARLON BROWN (2 sacks) and defensive MIKE RENNA (1 sack among six tackles) provided the hits up front for the Monarchs.
