Olympic Stadium; Montreal, Canada; June 6, 1992 Attendance: 43,789 Temperature: Dome: 70.5F SACRAMENTO SURGE 21, ORLANDO THUNDER 17--Quarterback DAVID ARCHER (league MVP) threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns as the Sacramento Surge rallied from a 14-point, first-half deficit to capture World Bowl 1992 with a 21-17 triumph over the Orlando Thunder before a crowd of 43,789 at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Sacramento fell behind early as Orlando quarterback SCOTT MITCHELL (187 yards/2 TDs) led the Thunder on a 12-play, 98-yard drive capped by his 10-yard scoring strike to CHRIS FORD on a crossing pattern in the back of the endzone late in the first quarter. The Surge got on the board with a 32-yard field goal by CARY BLANCHARD early in the second quarter. Following a Sacramento fumble at its own nine-yard line (a dropped punt by Sacramento's All-World receiver Eddie Brown), Mitchell found wide receiver WILLIE DAVIS in the end zone to go ahead 14-3. With just under two minutes remaining in the half, Orlando's MALCOLM FRANK intercepted an Archer's pass at midfield and returned it to Sacramento's nine-yard line. Sacramento's defense held up, however, and Orlando settled for TRACY BENNETT's 20-yard field goal. Sacramento's defense, which limited Orlando's high-powered offense (336 yds/game) to only 203 yards, forced three turnovers (two fumbles, one interception), and recorded two sacks in the game. Mitchell, who was 12 of 22 for 119 yards in the first half, felt the effect of the Surge's defensive rush as he was constantly hurried in the second half, completing only 6 of 19 pass attempts with one interception after intermission. After a scoreless third quarter, Archer hooked up with tight end PAUL GREEN 3:33 into the fourth quarter for a 12-yard scoring strike. Archer then found MARK STOCK for the two-point conversion as Sacramento cut Orlando's advantage to 17-14. Sacramento seized the lead after linebacker MICHAEL JONES intercepted Mitchell's pass and returned it to Orlando's 34 yard line. Four plays later, Archer lofted a two-yard pass to EDDIE BROWN (8 catches for 78 yards) in the corner of the endzone, as Sacramento went ahead, 21-17, with just 5:35 remaining. David Archer was named the game's MVP. |
