| World Bowl 1998 - Rhein 34, Frankfurt 10 |
| Walstadion; Frankfurt, Germany; June 14, 1998 Attendance: 47,846 Temperature: 66F, cloudy
QUARTERBACK Jim Arellanes, making his first Fire start in place of injured passer Mike Quinn, captured the game's MVP award and led Rhein to World Bowl glory in front of 47,846 fans in Frankfurt's Waldstadion - the biggest crowd to witness the season finale since 1991. The first World Bowl between the German rivals featured a pair of backup quarterbacks with Frankfurt led by Chris Dittoe for the injured Damon Huard. Rhein led throughout a contest played in torrential rain that lashed down after the Fire took a first quarter advantage through a Manny Burgsmüller 29-yard field goal. It came after the game's spectacular first play when Arellanes hit league MVP Marcus Robinson on a 40-yard flea flicker. Arellanes found Dialleo Burks for a 15-yard touchdown pass for a 10-0 lead, but Frankfurt hit back through a 3-yard Jermaine Chaney run early in the second quarter to reduce the deficit to three points. Arellanes repeated his connection with Burks for a 20-yard score and a 17-7 half time lead, then Ralf Kleinmann pulled the Galaxy back to within three on a 41-yard field goal, only for Rhein to stretch their advantage immediately. Running back Derrick Clark gained short yardage from deep in Fire territory before a spectacular 74-yard touchdown pass to Robinson put Rhein 14 points clear of their arch-rival.
A tough Fire defense contained the Galaxy through the third quarter and Robert Davis intercepted Dittoe to set up a 20-yard field goal for Burgsmüller. Tackle Ed Phillion sacked Dittoe on fourth down as Frankfurt mounted a last comeback attempt on their next drive and, starting inside the Galaxy red zone, Jon Vaughn ran 15 yards to score and complete a 34-10 victory. |

This year's
World Bowl will be played June 14 at Waldstadion in Frankfurt, Germany. Kickoff
is set for 7:00 p.m. CET, 6:00 p.m. BST, 1:00 p.m. EDT, and 10:00 a.m. PDT and
will be broadcast on FOX (USA), DSF (Germany), Sky Sports (UK), (LIVE),Canal
Plus (Holland) Sportmania (Spain), FOX Sports America (Central/South America)
The Stadium
Located in the southwest section of Frankfurt,
Walstadion was dedicated on May 21, 1925. The venue has built a glorious
history, including hosting a Muhammad Ali title fight and being used as one of
the venues for the 1994 World Cup. Today, Waldstadion is the site for home games
of Eintracht Frankfurt, the city's soccer team, and, of course, the home of the
Frankfurt Galaxy.
The City
Frankfurt is the financial capital of Germany, serving as
the headquarters of the German Federal Central Bank, the State Central Bank of
Hessen and 411 other credit institutions. It has also been chosen as the site
for the European Central Bank. The city is more than 1,200 years old and is home
to more than 650,000 people.
It is believed that the city was established as a settlement by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. Its location on the Main River at the heart of the European continent made it the crossroads of prehistoric trade routes linking northern Europe with the Mediterranean areas, and Eastern and Western Europe. The Museum Embankment, made up of eight museums, is a central part of the city's culture. Another point of interest is the Römer, which was used as town hall for nearly 600 years.
The Trophy
At the conclusion of World Bowl '98, members of the
victorious team will assemble in front of the main stand to receive the World
Bowl trophy. The World Bowl trophy, which stands 14 inches high, consists of a
nine-and-one-half-inch crystal sphere and a permanent display base. The sphere,
which is an outline of the World, was etched with a high pressured knife by
hand. It was produced by John Morrison of Cornerstone Glassworks of Dallas,
Texas. After the London Monarchs defeated the Barcelona Dragons in World Bowl
'91, they stored the coveted trophy inside the Tower of London.
The crystal sphere of the World Bowl trophy weighs 41 pounds (18.6 kg). In comparison, the Vince Lombardi Trophy, awarded annually to the winner of the Super Bowl, weighs 6.7 pounds (3.04 kg).
