Team History:
Frankfurt's 'Big Bang' occurred in 1991, the year the Galaxy played its inaugural season. One of the three remaining founding teams of the World League, the Galaxy has played in the World Bowl twice in the last three seasons, winning the title in 1995. With Dick Curl as the new head coach in Frankfurt, the Galaxy fans have extra reason to hope that their team can qualify for the championship game as World Bowl '98 will be played in Waldstadion on June 14.With a record of 7-3, the Galaxy just missed the playoffs in 1991. A close to capacity crowd of 51,653 fans witnessed the Galaxy's decisive loss against Sacramento in the season's home finale. Despite dropping to 3-7 in 1992, Galaxy led the league with an average attendance of 36,000. Running back Tony Baker and linebacker Yepi Pau'u were the team's most successful players in the early seasons. In 1994, when Oliver Luck left Frankfurt, Christoph Heyne became the new General Manager.
Heyne quickly hired Ernie Stautner, the only German born member of the 'Hall of Fame', as the new head coach, succeeding Jack Elway. On June 17, 1995, Frankfurt defeated the Amsterdam Admirals 26-22 in the World Bowl. Quarterback Paul Justin, allocated by the Indianapolis Colts, threw three TD passes and was voted the game's MVP.
In 1996, the Galaxy became the first team with two World Bowl appearances. Forced to play the championship game on the road again, the Galaxy were defeated 32-27 by the Scottish Claymores. Munich-born running back Ingo Seibert was voted Europe's 'Best Offensive Player'. The award for 'Best Defensive Player' went to the Galaxy's Frank Messmer in 1997, a season notable for some narrow defeats and the team's first losing season (4-6) in three years. Coach Stautner's contract was not renewed and on October 17, 1997, Dick Curl was appointed as the third head coach in the Galaxy's history.
Curl, who declined an offer by the New Orleans Saints in favor of Frankfurt, had been the offensive coordinator of the Barcelona Dragons since 1991. Also in October, the World League awarded World Bowl '98 to Frankfurt, the city which has led the league in attendance since 1992.
Frankfurt has the distinction of scoring the first points in World League history when nose tackle Chris Williams tackled London running back Judd Garrett in the endzone for a safety. Although, they scored the first points, they were not able to win their first game, falling to the Monarchs 24-11. The team enjoyed a highly successful first year, going 7-3 in the highly competitive European Division. Despite owning the third best record in the league, they did not make the playoffs. Frankfurt continues to play in the new World League.
City/Region:
Frankfurt is the financial capital of Germany, serving as the headquarters of the German Federal Central Bank, the State Central Bank of Hessen and 411 other credit institutions. It has also been chosen as the site for the European Central Bank. The city is more than 1,200 years old and is home to more than 650,000 people. It is believed that the city was established as a settlement by the Romans in the 1st century A.D. It's location on the Main River at the heart of the European continent made it the crossroads of prehistoric trade routes linking northern Europe with the Mediterranean areas, and Eastern and Western Europe. The Museum Embankment, made up of eight museums, is a central part of the city's culture. Another point of interest is the Rmer which was used as town hall for nearly 600 years.
